Sometimes we do stupid things on the spur of the moment. Everything was going along just fine as we ambled through our day and then, BANG! Something sets us off and we rush headlong into evil.

It defies belief sometimes how quickly a perfect day can turn into an unmitigated disaster, simply because something set us off. Something offended us. Something picked away at an old wound and resulted in an outburst that no one, least of all we ourselves, expected.

Proverbs 14:17 A quick-tempered person does stupid things, but it is also true that people don’t like anyone who quietly plans evil.

Now, King Solomon here talks about two different sorts of evil – the sort that happens in the heat of the moment, and the sort that bubbles along under the surface as we plan our revenge. We’ll chat about that second one tomorrow. For now, let’s focus on the first one.

A quick-tempered person does stupid things.

I have to be honest … I am naturally a quick-tempered person. I do everything quickly. I think quickly. I walk quickly. I react quickly. That’s just who I am naturally. Perhaps you’re not. Maybe you’re more considered in your reactions. But still, there are a handful of things that make your blood boil.

What are the things that set you off? What are the triggers that cause you to react so badly? And how well has that worked for you in the past? How positive has it been for your relationships and your reputation?

A quick temper causes us to do stupid things.

Identify those things that set you off. Plan a different reaction. And stop doing stupid things.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
