Mark 6:31 Jesus and his followers were in a very busy place. There were so many people that he and his followers did not even have time to eat. He said to them, “Come with me. We will go to a quiet place to be alone. There we will get some rest.”

Well, here we are in that odd little space between Christmas and New Year – that week when many of us feel a bit in limbo land. So how are you going to spend this week? Doing stuff, or thinking about stuff?

This time of year, most of us are looking for a bit of a break; another year in the can, Christmas is done, the New Year’s not quite here yet. So whoever you are, wherever you live, it’s time to chill, to recharge the batteries and contemplate life, which is for so many, so jam-packed full of activity that there’s precious little time to stop and think – to rest and enjoy, to look back and reflect, to look forward and dream.

I’ve heard people claim, almost as a badge of honour, that they never take holidays, that they work most weekends, that … really? Get a revelation – even Jesus regularly drew aside for some rest and recuperation.

Mark 6:31 Jesus and his followers were in a very busy place. There were so many people that he and his followers did not even have time to eat. He said to them, “Come with me. We will go to a quiet place to be alone. There we will get some rest.”

So at this time of year, can I encourage you to actually stop the frenetic activity and to think about your life, your family, your priorities, your future. With all this doing, it’s so easy to get life out of balance. Our priorities end up all wrong – juggling this, cramming that – and we can end up burnt out.

So today, with all my heart, I believe that our God, our Saviour, is saying this to us both:

Come with me. We will go to a quiet place to be alone. There we will get some rest.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.

As a Jewish believer in Jesus, I observe the shabbat – that is from sunset on Friday till sunset on Saturday. It is for me and my family a resting and reflecting time at the end of each week and before the beginning of the next week. It is a special time for us.
May the Lord bless you and the work of your hands – at Christianity Works !
