Humility is a great attribute to have, but learning humility, being humbled by God as it were, the getting of humility, that bit’s not all that much fun is it? And yet, it’s one of the most powerful things that God will ever do for you, to humble you.

Have you ever been humbled? You know, you’re going along, all confident about something, everyone expects you to “succeed” and all of a sudden, you fall flat on your face.

Now everybody stands back, points the finger and judges you as you fall several notches in their estimation. It’s not pretty is it? It’s not a whole bunch of fun.

We expect every post to be a winner. We’re conditioned to believe that success is good, and failure is bad.

And when I fail, that must mean that I’m a failure.

That’s how we think, because that’s how we’ve been conditioned to think. But sometimes God deliberately humbles us. It’s one of the things that He does because He loves us. So when we’re getting too full of ourselves, He humbles us by letting us trip over our pride.

It’s actually not a bad thing at all. Because God gives grace to the humble and opposes the proud. Pride is something we can all suffer from, and God has the answer.

Psalm 119:71,72 Suffering was good for me; I learned your laws. Your teachings are worth more to me than a thousand pieces of silver and gold.

I think the reason that we learn our greatest lessons in times of suffering, is that as we’re humbled, our hearts soften, sometimes our hearts break, and the Word that the Holy Spirit has already written on our hearts, drops in and becomes part of us.

And that … that’s worth more than a thousand pieces of silver and gold.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
