Most of us are pretty good at rationalising our own immaturity and bad behaviour. But God’s heart is for us to think like adults, not like children.

I hopped on the bus the other day and it was pretty full, so I ended up sitting right at the back on that bench that runs continuously from left to right.

Now this was a brand new, clean, air-conditioned bus, so you can imagine my disappointment when I saw the hot pink graffiti plastered all over the seats and walls around me.

The perpetrators even signed their names – a boy and a girl. It boggles my mind the immaturity required to do something like that. Why can’t people just grow up?!

But as I was contemplating this senseless act, I just had this sense that our sin – your sin, my sin – is a bit like that graffiti. It’s born out of an immaturity, a selfishness, a lack of regard or respect for others. Maybe our sin looks a bit like that graffiti to God. Because let’s be honest, some of the things we do sometimes are pretty senseless too.

1 Corinthians 14:20 Brothers and sisters, don’t think like children. In evil things be like babies, but in your thinking you should be like full-grown adults.

I’m sure those two kids who defaced the bus laughed about it, rationalised it and moved on. And when we behave badly, we’re a bit the same. We laugh it off, rationalise it and move on.

Might I ask you, in what area of your life, in your makeup, your personality, your behaviour, do you still have a bit of growing up to do?

Maybe it’s time we just … grew up.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
