As counterintuitive as it may seem, the moment we set out to live a good life, to do right, to love others, to work hand-in-hand with God to overcome our inherent weaknesses, the critics are going to come out of the woodwork.

Sadly it’s true, because we live in a depraved society. Does that sound a bit harsh? Then look around at all the wrong that’s been reborn, rebranded as being right. The immorality that’s all of a sudden acceptable. The selfishness, the division, the chaos.

So when you step out into that mess with a heart to follow after Jesus, with a passion to see the lost saved, whyever would you imagine that the world would be pleased with you?

Dr D James Kennedy once put it like this: Tolerance is the last virtue of a depraved society. When you have an immoral society that has blatantly, proudly violated all of the commandments of God, there is one last virtue they insist upon: tolerance for their immorality.

But whilst we may well do our best to love the sinner … sure, with varying degrees of success … we cannot, as followers of Jesus Christ, rebirth wrong as right in our hearts. And as a result, the world will come against us for our faith in Jesus.

That can be tough, because we like to be liked. We all experience a twinge in our hearts when someone criticises us for holding to God’s Word – something that can happen with such vehemence and vitriol in the world of social media.

So if you’ve ever experienced that twinge, smarted at the rejection, get this into your heart:

2 Timothy 3:12 Everyone who wants to live showing true devotion to God in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

Don’t be surprised when people persecute you. Don’t be surprised when God blesses you.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
