Freedom is one of those concepts with a lot of “cerebral curb appeal”. In other words, it’s an idea that we naturally want to pull up next to. But it’s a concept that’s been hijacked by a selfish, misguided world.

Here in the 21st century, the idea of absolute moral imperatives that arise out of an all-loving, all-powerful God – the notion that there is such a thing as “sin” – well, for many people, that’s absolutely laughable. The world looks on at that and thinks to itself, anyone who believes that is completely crazy.

And hey, even huge swathes of the church are intent on diluting those moral imperatives to the point where they become meaningless.

But God loves each one of us so much that eventually He confronts us with the stark reality of the depravity of our sin, and of who He is and what Jesus did to set us free from that sin. And that deep conviction of our misguided rebellion leaves us in a place to choose – either to accept Christ and His hard-won forgiveness, or to continue on our way.

I found that such a difficult choice, because the depth of my sin was so great. But as Presbyterian pastor Dane Ortlund puts it, Jesus sides with us against our sin, not against us because of our sin.

Good news, indeed! So why then would we fall back into our sin? Why, having accepted the grace and mercy of God in Jesus Christ, would we give up our freedom and return to the evil which we once did?

Galatians 5:1 We have freedom now, because Christ made us free. So stand strong in that freedom. Don’t go back into slavery again.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.

And the saying goes “freedom is not free” , the price to pay for the freedom is simple, just leave sin.
