It’s funny how sin – I know, it’s not a popular word these days – has this habit of creeping back into our lives without us even realising it. Today it’s time for a reality check … a wakeup call.

And one of the most insidious sins known to humanity is greed, because it germinates right there amidst our good intentions.

Sure, we want to get ahead. When you’re young it’s about raising a family, perhaps buying your first home, climbing the ladder at work to earn that bit more to pay for the things we need … and eventually for the things we want.

Then before you know it, you want more and more, which leads to a few very unpleasant things. For some, it leads to unmanageable debt as they’re lured by stuff outside their reach. For others, it leads to a decision to give less and less to God’s work (we chatted about that yesterday). And for some, it leads to dishonesty, cutting financial corners here and there to make ends meet.

Like I said, greed is one of the most insidious sins of all. So, are you ready for today’s reality check?

Proverbs 11:6 Doing right sets honest people free, but people who can’t be trusted are trapped by their greed.

The original Hebrew text equates honesty with righteousness, and calls those who can’t be trusted treacherous. As brutal as that assessment is, it’s also pretty darned accurate.

So, if greed and dishonesty have been chipping away at you of late, tempting you, take note now before it’s too late. Because …

Doing right sets honest people free, but people who can’t be trusted are trapped by their greed.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
