So another Easter is just around the corner, and whilst we take these annual celebrations, commemorations, festivals – whatever you’d like to call them – for granted, what’s it going to mean to you? Does it even make sense?

For a long time, Easter simply didn’t make sense to me. The executive summary – Easter in a nutshell, if you will – is this; the Son of God, Jesus, died to pay for our sin, yours and mine. Then He rose again to give us victory over death and the free gift of eternal life for anyone who believes this Easter story. That’s it.

The thing that always bothered me about this though, was this crazy notion that … I mean, why would God send His own Son to suffer death on a cross for my sin? If I messed up that badly, why can’t I just go to God and say, “Hey, look God, I’m sorry.” Surely God could just forgive me. That’s not unreasonable.

I had a friend recently who lost his driver’s license through speeding. I wonder, had he fronted up to the judge and said, “Hey, look judge, I’m sorry,” whether the judge could just have forgiven him. That’s not unreasonable.

Of course it is … because justice always demands that a price be paid to set things right, be it losing your license, going to prison for a time … or indeed, losing your life.

1 John 3:5 You know that Christ came to take away people’s sins. There is no sin in Christ.

So instead of us bearing the pain of the punishment that God’s justice demands, God looked at us, ached for us and sent His Son in our place, to take our sin away.

Justice demands a price. Jesus paid that price for you and me. That’s Easter.

And that’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
