The more affluent we become, the more technologically connected we become, the more, it seems, that parenting skills are being eroded, replace by, what, a smartphone screen?

Over the last few days, I’ve been sharing some parenting tips with you from my good friends Mark and Precious, who have brought up – in an amazing way – nine children, all of whom – as adults – are walking with the Lord. So, here’s their tip number 3:

This one comes from Luke Chapter 6, Verse 40, where Jesus says that: Everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.

Now I guess people don’t usually relate this verse to parenting, but the implications are pretty clear. We can’t hope to produce things in our children which we ourselves do not possess. We can’t expect them to be peaceful, if we’re not peaceful. We can’t expect them to be honest, if we’re not honest, and so on. We can’t expect them to be reliable, or hard working … we can’t expect them to be godly, if we’re not!

Our children, after all of our nurturing and teaching (creative or not, intentional or not, verbal or not) WILL BE LIKE US!

Hmm, now there is a scary thought. But it’s true, isn’t it?

Children learn from their parents much more so by observation and experience, than they do by being lectured to, talked at, disciplined or rewarded. They’re watching, they’re noticing every little thing and modelling that in their own lives, whether we like it or not.

If you’re a parent, might I ask you, what did they learn from you in the last twenty-four hours?

Luke 6:40 Students are not better than their teacher. But when they have been fully taught, they will be like their teacher.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
