We all want to be good parents when we bring children into the world, but nobody ever tells us what a tough job it is. Nobody ever tells us about the challenges and the demands of this ultra-marathon called “parenting”.

Being a parent is one of the most challenging roles that we can ever take on. There’s no training school. I mean dads; do you feel adequate and comfortable in the role of being a father? No? Me either … and my kids are all grown up now. I don’t think we ever get to the point of thinking to ourselves “I have this fatherhood thing nailed!”

As much as we wish we could be perfect fathers, we all get things wrong. And one of the things that we do sometimes, in our zeal to get our children to grow up and to mature and to perform, is that we step over the line in our zeal and sometimes our anger, which in turn just ends up provoking our children to anger. And all that does is to breed discord and disrespect in the home.

That’s something that God knows all too well. He’s seen it all before. So here is His take, His advice for fathers:

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, don’t make your children angry, but raise them with the kind of teaching and training you learn from the Lord.

God’s teaching, God’s training is fair, firm and friendly. He encourages us way more than He disciplines us, although He doesn’t shy away from discipline when it’s needed. He leads us through difficult situations, giving us the ability to choose and yes, to fail, but providing His wisdom along the way.

In fact, when you think about it, God’s approach with us is such a great model for fatherhood, don’t you think?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
