Families are great … until they aren’t. Families are wonderful … until one day you find yourself being driven completely crazy by the bad habits, the idiosyncrasies of that one family member! You know what I’m talking about, right?!

Families. They’re something we tend to take for granted. They just exist. Most of us were born into a family. Most of us grew up in a family. Many of us have started our own families. And yet this thing called “family” doesn’t always turn out to be what you’d hoped it would be, does it?

You look at the personality clashes and the conflict going on in your family and compare that to the oh-so-perfect families that your friends seem to have, and you just shake your head. What’s the matter with my lot? Why can’t they be normal like everyone else’s family?! And yet, the truth is that there’s no such thing as a perfect family. Look at Adam and Eve’s kids:

Genesis 4:8 Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” So they went to the field. Then Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

How’s that for a dysfunctional family? And whilst I’m hoping that you haven’t had any murders just yet (Lord knows you’ve been tempted some days, right?!) that’s the way families have been ever since sin entered this world. So no, it’s not just your family that has issues.

But as imperfect as our families may be, they’ve been part of God’s grand design since the very beginning. It was always God’s plan to put imperfect people up close to imperfect people in this thing we call “family”, because when you think about it, the closer we are to those imperfect people, the more opportunity we have to learn how to love them.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
