Have you ever wondered, what’s the difference between a child and an adult? Other than the obvious physical realities, what’s the one thing that sets the two apart? At what point do you know that this child of yours is finally an adult?

Bringing up teenagers is, without doubt, one of the most exquisite combinations of delight and frustration that exists in all of human experience. If you’ve ever been there, you know precisely what I mean.

It’s so wonderful to see them blossom into adulthood. And yet it can be so incredibly frustrating when you see them making mistakes and getting hurt. But that’s the way they learn things. That’s how a person grows up.

And a huge part of leaving childhood behind and growing into adulthood is moving away from being me-centred to becoming someone who knows how to serve others; how to sacrifice, how to cook and wash and clean and go to work day after day without much recognition, just because it has to be done.

The mark of maturity is, in fact, our ability to serve others – which is probably why it seems that some people have never actually grown up. Here’s a Father’s advice to His children on that very thing:

1 Peter 4:10 God has shown you his grace in many different ways. So be good servants and use whatever gift he has given you in a way that will best serve each other.

And here’s the crazy thing … it’s not until we leave the me, me, me thing behind, it’s not until we become servants using the unique gifts that God has given each one of us to bless others, that we discover the deep satisfaction that comes from being all that God made us to be.

So, in case you missed it, here it is again. Grow up.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
