Matthew 4:21,22 Jesus continued walking by Lake Galilee. He saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee. They were preparing their nets to catch fish. Jesus told the brothers to come with him. So they immediately left the boat and their father, and they followed Jesus.

What sort of a year are you looking forward to? Is it going to be the same old, same old … again? Same day job, same routine. Or are you looking forward to an adventure? What will this year hold for you?

Now in large part, you and I, we have no idea what lies ahead. But as we step across the threshold of this new year, there’s something that we can do to make it a tad more interesting, a bit more exciting. And it all has to do with our sense of anticipation – an expectation that following Jesus into the unknown is going to be something of … well, an adventure.

Yesterday, we saw how He called Simon Peter and his brother Andrew to follow Him, which they did. But as things turned out, He was looking for still more disciples.

Now, think about this. Jesus was calling these guys, James and John, into a life of uncertainty. They’d been doing the same thing night after night with their father Zebedee – taking the boat out, lowering their nets, catching fish, coming back, cleaning up, selling their catch at market. It was regular, it was predictable, it was safe. But when Jesus called them to follow Him, immediately they left the boat and their father, and did just that.

It turns out that Jesus is still looking for disciples to follow Him. Are you ready? Will you go?

So they immediately left the boat and their father, and they followed Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
