1 Chronicles 4:9,10 Jabez was honoured more than his brothers; and his mother named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from hurt and harm!” And God granted what he asked.

Today we’re going to meet a really amazing man, way back in the Old Testament. His name is Jabez. We don’t find out all that much about him, but what we are told packs a lot of punch! Seriously!

A question: Would you like to be honoured by God above your brothers and sisters? That might sound a tad selfish. It might sound as though I’m asking you to have grandiose ideas about yourself. And yet God tells us that that’s exactly what happened to Jabez.

(NRSV)

So poor old Jabez didn’t have such a great start in life. His name literally means “a pain” and in a culture where a person’s name was synonymous with who they were, that was definitely not a good thing.

And yet Jabez was honoured “more than his brothers” we’re told. Why? Because Jabez asked God to bless him – Not just a little bit, but a lot – in all sorts of different ways.

Way too many of us try to do things that only God can do. Sure there are some things we can do, and we should do those well. But some things only God can do. And that’s where His blessings come in.

So … when was the last time you asked God to bless you? Hmm?

Despite this not so great beginning in life, Jabez was honoured more than his brothers. There was a reason for that.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
