The more social media’s taken hold of our world, the easier it’s become for everyone to have a voice, to state their opinions, to shout them into the faces and the lives of others. It’s become quite ugly out there.

Even just a decade ago, none of that had really taken hold of our social consciousness. To be heard, you had to be published in a newspaper, heard on radio, seen on television.

But these days, anyone with a mobile phone and an Instagram account can become an “influencer”. What’s emerged is a cacophony of strident opinions that purport to pass as facts but are, more often than not, merely emotional outbursts from empty vessels.

So how do you speak up amidst all that? How do you get heard?

When I first began working in radio, I made the mistake of trying to say too much in the sixty or ninety seconds I’d been allocated. That meant that I had to talk quickly. It certainly meant that there was no room for pauses.

Until a wise old program director got a hold of me and counselled me to slow down, to pause. You’ll get people’s attention that way, he said. And it’s true. A pause … grabs your attention. Why? Because it stands out in contrast to all the noise. And it’s the same with holiness.

Colossians 3:12 God has chosen you and made you his holy people. He loves you. So your new life should be like this: Show mercy to others. Be kind, humble, gentle, and patient.

To be holy means to be separate, to stand out. The mercy you show, your kindness, your humility, your gentleness and patience – they stand in such contrast to all the self-serving opinions in this clamorous world. They’re like a pause … amidst all the noise. Be holy.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
