Ephesians 2:8,9 I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. You are not saved by the things you have done, so there is nothing to boast about.

Have you ever wondered, what’s the difference between grace and mercy? I mean we talk about those two in the same breath so many times. So, are they the same, or are they different?

Mercy and grace, it seems to me, are two sides of the same coin. Mercy is when God takes away the punishment that we so richly deserve for rebelling against Him. And grace is when He gives us, instead, untold blessings that we simply don’t deserve.

Like it or not, you and I have rebelled against God and the wages of sin, we’re told in the Bible, is death. But because He loves us so much, he heaped the death that we deserve, on Jesus on that Cross. Jesus suffered and died on our behalf. That’s mercy. Not giving us what we deserved, but instead, taking it upon Himself.

But on top of that, in place of the punishment we do deserve, He gives us a rich abundant life here and now, and for all of eternity.

Ephesians 2:8,9 I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. You are not saved by the things you have done, so there is nothing to boast about.

Some days we look in the mirror and all we can see, is what we’ve done wrong. We see how unworthy we really are, and we realise that there’s simply no hope. We don’t deserve God’s grace.

Mercy – when God doesn’t give us the bad things we do deserve. Grace, when God gives us the good things that we don’t deserve.

It’s simply not fair is it? Mercy and grace are unjust when you think about them.

But then, that’s the whole point, isn’t it?

Mercy. Grace. Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
