Deuteronomy 8:3 He humbled you … in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

Okay, we’ve all heard that sermon “You should read your Bible.” Yeah, yeah, I know … but you know … if only we realised what was at stake here. If only God’s people would stop trifling with His Word, and listen when He speaks. If only …

The other day, I rang Max who runs the studio where I record my radio programs. I was due there that day so I always ring ahead, but he didn’t answer the phone. Hmm, that’s a bit of a worry. So I rang him a little bit later and he kind of sheepishly said, “I couldn’t find my phone when you rang.”

We had a good laugh about the olden days, when the phone was wired to the wall.

But it reminded me, I guess, about our communication with God. I wonder just how many people who claim to be Christians could even find their Bible right now. Some could, but a whole bunch … Well, I think it’s up in a cupboard or down in a drawer somewhere.

Your Bible is like the phone, only instead of just Berni calling, it’s God. Imagine that right now – He’s ready to speak some important, some powerful truth that you need to hear for what you’re about to face today – but hold the phone … you’re not even listening.

Your Bible is just like your phone. Unless you pick it up and listen, you’ll never hear what God’s saying.

Maybe that’s why so many Christians’ lives are a mess. Maybe that’s why they find it so hard to lay hold of the intimate relationship with God that they yearn for.

Deuteronomy 8:3 He humbled you … in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

Read your Bible.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
