More and more families are being torn apart by the scourge of divorce. In many countries, the divorce rate is approaching forty percent. And of those marriages that don’t end in divorce, many of them are at best, a loveless détente, devoid of intimacy and joy.

Okay, at a macro level, that’s a terrible statistic; it’s a terrible thing. But at an individual level, the toll is unimaginable. One loveless marriage, one divorce, for that one family, is an unspeakable tragedy.

When is this madness going to end? Judging from the way society is headed, judging from the trends in the statistics, the answer, quite clearly, is no time soon.

A man and a woman get married with all the best intentions. They have hopes and dreams for a life together. Most of them end up bringing children into this world … but little by little, husband and wife drift apart. They don’t mean to. They just do.

They have so many things going on. Pressures. Responsibilities. Arguments. Tensions. It’s easier sometimes just to crawl back in your shell and hide, than it is to love the one you’re meant to love, until you’re parted in death. So that’s exactly what they do, they grow further and further apart and eventually they just give up.

It doesn’t happen overnight … it takes time for two people to drift apart. If this stuff resonates with you, can I say this to you as kindly and as tenderly as I know how, wake up! What are you doing? At the very least, your children need your marriage. Desperately so.

So, husbands, today, I have a very specific word for you. You’re meant to be the leader in your marriage. You’re meant to take the helm, the initiative. Don’t let this happen to your marriage.

Husbands, love your wives the same as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it. (Ephesians 5:25)

That verse speaks of the husband’s job to love his wife unconditionally. No matter how hard it is, no matter what it costs you, even though it may cost you your life, give her your all.

Husbands, fathers, your children – no matter what age they are – need your marriage. And when you love your wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her, that’s exactly what you’re giving them.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
