Romans 8:26 Also, the Spirit helps us. We are very weak, but the Spirit helps us with our weakness. We don’t know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit himself speaks to God for us. He begs God for us, speaking to him with feelings too deep for words.

We live in a world that basically rewards performance and achievement. We live in a world where you’re meant to be self-sufficient. We live in a world where we’ve been taught that success depends on us.

Sometimes in life it hurts so much inside that we’re lost for words. Or things are so complicated, so confusing, that we don’t even know what to say to God – how we should pray, what we should ask for.

Have you ever been there? You ache so deeply that you kind of sit there without even have the strength to utter a word of prayer. You want to, but you just can’t. All there is, is a deep groaning inside.

Two thousand years ago, the Apostle Paul wrote almost half the books of the New Testament – some of them while he was incarcerated on death row. So there can be no doubt that he knew exactly what that was like. And so he wrote this:

Romans 8:26 Also, the Spirit helps us. We are very weak, but the Spirit helps us with our weakness. We don’t know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit himself speaks to God for us. He begs God for us, speaking to him with feelings too deep for words.

In those moments when you don’t even know where to begin, know this: it’s not up to you. God’s not depending on you in your moment of weakness. In fact, quite the opposite.

As we just lift the eyes of our souls Christ-ward, it’s the Holy Spirit Himself who intercedes for us … with groans too deep to express. As we simply gaze upon Jesus amidst a pain and a lostness that defies words, that my friend, is prayer. And that’s all it takes.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
