As you contemplate the year that lies ahead, might I ask you, how much are you thinking about yourself, and how much are you thinking about helping the poor and the needy in your part of the world? Hmm?

From time to time, we all get to thinking how tough we have it; how difficult things are … financially, emotionally. You know the routine. And before you know it, you’re thinking to yourself: poor li’l old me.

I was really quite taken aback by an email I received recently from a man who’d been through a great tragedy in his life. This is what he said about his childhood:

We were a poor family and went without things most kids took for granted. But I had been brought up to be generous, even though I had nothing to give. So, I would go and mow elderly people’s lawns or do jobs for nothing in a bid to help others

It’s this idea that even though our circumstances aren’t ideal – we can still reach out with compassion. We can still help other people. We can still make a difference in this world. And, you know, when we do that, something amazing happens. God uses that, to changes us. All of a sudden, things don’t seem quite that bad anymore.

Deuteronomy 15:11 For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’

There’s always someone who’s going to be needier than you are. So, as you think about the year that lies ahead, let me encourage you to factor in what you’re going to do for the poor and needy; how you’re going to reach out and bless them.

Because when you do, God will, in turn, bless your socks off!

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
