Here’s a fact: Just because everybody’s doing something, doesn’t make it right. And there’s something that these days a lot of people are doing that I’m going to call out today, because very clearly it’s wrong.

Reality TV seems to be all the rage these days, whether it’s home makeovers or razz-a-matazzy talent shows … whatever the particular unreality happens to be that they’re trying to dress up to sucker us in and make money (sorry to sound cynical but those are the facts of the matter).

And then finally when someone wins or something good happens, what do they say? “Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!”

I even see Christians on social media OMGing about things. Really?!

Exodus 20:7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. (NRSV)

Let’s not take this lightly. This is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, we’re talking about here.

I used to be into “Oh My God” too. And “Jesus Christ!” I used the Lord’s name in vain all the time. But then one day – it was a dark day, a day when I was hurting, a day when the world had come crashing down on my heart – despite all I’d done, Jesus walked into my life.

He healed my broken heart. He set me free from the things that held me captive. Where I was blind, He gave me sight. He spoke good news of God’s favour.

Since then, since He poured out His mercy on me, since He filled my life with His grace, since He gave me a future with hope, those words have seemed so inappropriate.

Get a revelation: don’t use the Lord’s name in vain. Ever.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
