James 4:13 Some of you say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to some city. We will stay there a year, do business, and make money.” Listen, think about this: You don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Your life is like a fog. You can see it for a short time, but then it goes away. So you should say, “If the Lord wants, we will live and do this or that.”

This week between Christmas and Easter is always a funny sort of week, don’t you think? The whole Christmas thing is done, the new year is almost upon us but not quite. It’s kind of a limbo land. What does this next year hold for you?

The rule of thumb that my parents had for getting rid of the Christmas tree each year was that it had to be gone before January 1st. After all, it was going brown by then and dropping the pine needles all over the floor. As I recall, it was never quite as much fun pulling it down as it was putting it up.

At some point between Christmas and New Year, we do a similar thing in life. We kind of let go of what’s been and look ahead to what’s coming up – at least, that’s the theory.

So here we are – laying one year to rest and getting ready for a new one … how do you feel? Was this past year a good one? Maybe, maybe not. And what about next year – will it be a good one? Maybe, maybe not.

James 4:13-15 Some of you say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to some city. We will stay there a year, do business, and make money.” Listen, think about this: You don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Your life is like a fog. You can see it for a short time, but then it goes away. So you should say, “If the Lord wants, we will live and do this or that.”

So as you pack away your Christmas decorations and get ready for the year ahead, are you planning on inviting God on the journey ahead or going it alone? Are you looking forward to walking side-by-side with Jesus or going your own way? Well … what’s the plan for your uncertain future?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
