We live in a noisy, cluttered world. A world in which, these days, it’s so hard to find time to draw away to spend quiet time alone with God.

I was on a long flight recently, and I saw someone with a set of those noise-cancelling headphones. They’re supposed to block out the background noise, so you can hear whatever it is you’re listening to.

So I asked him, “Do they actually work?”

He smiled. “Here, put them on.” So I did. It was amazing. The noise of the plane was almost completely gone and you could hear even the softest, most delicate music. If I hadn’t tried them on, I would never have believed it.

We live in a noisy world, where everything and everyone is competing for our attention; a world in which it’s so difficult, to find a quiet place to spend some time alone with God.

And yet, back in the day, everybody wanted a piece of Jesus too. He was a celebrity, He had rock-star status, but somehow, He always made time, to get away, to pray.

Matthew 14:23 After Jesus said goodbye to the people, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. It was late, and he was there alone.

A few years ago, I started doing that too. And can I tell you – it was amazing. All that noise disappeared and I started hearing His still, small voice for myself. If I hadn’t tried it, I would never have believed it.

We can make excuse after excuse. And yet Jesus, the Son of God, even He, carved out time to hear His Father’s voice. So how do we imagine that we can get by, that we can live a life of power and love, without doing the same?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
