Acts 1:4,5 One time when Jesus was eating with them, he told them not to leave Jerusalem. He said, “Wait here until you receive what the Father promised to send. Remember, I told you about it before. John baptised people with water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit is God. We talk about God the Father and God the Son, but how often do you hear people talk about God the Holy Spirit? And in any case, why is it that Christians argue so much about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

If there’s one thing that stirs up controversy and causes conflict between different parts of the church more than any other, it’s the four short words “baptised in the Spirit”. Some people say it happens once, at the point when you believe. Others say it happens some time later, as a second blessing. And man, theological wars are fought over this issue.

And yet, what you discover when you read God’s Word – specifically the book of Acts – is that this baptism of the Holy Spirit happens both ways; however and whenever God pleases.

Frankly I’m not interested in the argument. I can’t be bothered. Here’s where it’s at for me. Jesus promised to fill us to overflowing, to drench us – which is what the word baptise means – with His Holy Spirit. What an awesome promise!

Acts 1:4,5 One time when Jesus was eating with them, he told them not to leave Jerusalem. He said, “Wait here until you receive what the Father promised to send. Remember, I told you about it before. John baptised people with water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.”

So here’s my prayer: Lord Jesus whenever, however you want, fill me to overflowing with your Holy Spirit. Make me clean and pure and holy. Give me power to be as humble and loving and giving as you were on this earth. Fill me, drench me, baptise me with your Spirit.

That … that’s where it’s at for me.

In a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit!

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
