Luke 4:18,19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” (NRSV)

Freedom is something that we all want in our lives. We want to be free to make our own choices, to follow our dreams. And yet all too often, we go looking for freedom in all the wrong places and that … well, that ends up being something of a disaster.

Jesus, by His own admission, came to do more, much more than simply die on that Cross, if that’s at all possible. Look, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, are supremely important. And through them God does some amazing things in our lives.

One of the things that Jesus Himself said that He came to do, was to bring release to the captives.

But what does that actually mean, here and now, in the 21st century? Well, if the truth be known, we are all slaves to our sin. And that slavery, robs us of the abundant life that Jesus wants you to have. So His dying on that Cross wasn’t just a piece of gruesome theatre. It wasn’t just an act.

His dying on that Cross, had a purpose. It still has a purpose. Because through His death on that Cross the power of sin, the powers of darkness in the heavenly places, was defeated. Once … and for all.

If you believe in Jesus, you have been released from the kingdom of darkness and transferred to the kingdom of light. Sin no longer has any power over you.

Jesus came to bring release to the captives. That’s you and me. Complete freedom. Not bad, eh?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
