The last few days we’ve been poking around in God’s Word to discover how He wants us to respond to the rising tide of evil in this world. The answer? To fight evil with good.

It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Don’t fight evil with evil, fight evil with good. That’s it … done: Nothing more to say on the subject –  until you try to live it out – which is when you know that really, you want to rip the other guy’s head off; or perhaps just crawl away and hide until the storm of evil passes. But come on … neither of those work. Neither of those is what God has called us to. So what, pray tell, has He called us to?

Proverbs 11:27 Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favour, but evil comes to the one who searches for it. (NRSV)

What a great concept; to diligently seek good. To set about every day with all your heart, with every fibre of your being, simply to think good, to say good and to do good. Oh, to be sure, evil in this world will rise up against you when you diligently seek good. It won’t be pleased. Not at all.

But you know the saying; cream always rises to the top. In other words, pretty soon people notice. Pretty soon you develop a reputation as being a good, decent, honest, loving person. Pretty soon, the one who diligently seeks good finds favour – the favour of people and, even more importantly, the favour of God.

I mean, what’s the alternative? To follow the desires of the flesh and fight evil with evil? How well has that worked for you in the past?

Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favour, but evil comes to the one who searches for it.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
