Matthew 19:5,6 And God said, ‘That is why a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. And the two people will become one.’ So they are no longer two, but one. God has joined them together, so no one should separate them.”

Marriage isn’t always a bed of roses. We wish it was, but it’s not. As the two learn to become one there are struggles, there are conflicts. Sometimes it all seems impossible and at that point, one or the other starts to think about … divorce.

The more affluent a society becomes, the higher the divorce rate goes. In most so-called developed countries, divorce is running at around 40 percent of all marriages.  Go to somewhere like India though, and the divorce rate is down around 1.3 percent. What’s going on here?

Divorce these days seems to be a lifestyle choice. You grow apart, you argue, you get divorced. Most countries these days have a no-fault divorce policy, so nobody has to prove anything. You just apply, a certificate gets issued and, hey presto, you’re divorced. Easy-peasy!

But God never intended for it to be that way because in His eyes, marriage is a life-long commitment. The only exceptions to that are sexual immorality and violence.

Matthew 19:5, 6 And God said, ‘That is why a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. And the two people will become one.’ So they are no longer two, but one. God has joined them together, so no one should separate them.”

Does divorce happen? Yes, it does. But to anyone who’s contemplating divorce right now as a lifestyle choice for reasons other than violence or sexual immorality, listen up.

That is not God’s plan for your life. God loves you, He loves your wife or husband and He is ready, willing and able to make a powerful difference in your marriage. What He’s looking for from you is your preparedness to trust Him; your preparedness to take Him at His Word, your preparedness to go the distance with this wife or this husband whom He has given you.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
