Isaiah 3:15 What gives you the right to hurt my people? What gives you the right to push the faces of the poor into the dirt?” The Lord God All-Powerful said this.

Complacency, surely, isn’t such a bad thing, really. But what if our complacency, yours and mine, is killing people? Does that sound a bit melodramatic? Well, let’s take a look at the facts in the cold, hard light of day.

Of the almost eight billion people alive today, around a billion are undernourished, while two and a half billion are overweight or obese. At the same time, those in the affluent west throw out around 30% of the food they buy.

Now I understand that these are fairly crude measure, but you’d have to conclude from those numbers that there’s something of an imbalance in the world’s wealth and resources – which is why every four seconds someone dies from malnutrition, while those in the wealthy west worship celebrity chefs, who earn a fortune entertaining us with exotic dishes that tickle our taste buds, make us grow fat and die of heart disease.

There’s a cheery thought.  So what does God think? What does He have to say about all this:

Isaiah 3:15 What gives you the right to hurt my people? What gives you the right to push the faces of the poor into the dirt?” The Lord God All-Powerful said this.

Maybe it feels as though I’ve been hammering this point a bit hard these past few days. Fair enough. But maybe, just maybe, since so many suffer in this world in which God has blessed so many of us with more than enough … maybe, just maybe, this is a point that needs hammering.

Amidst our comfort and wealth it’s so easy to lose sight of who God is, but to the extent that we fail to act, we’re hurting others. To the extent that we fail to act, we’re pushing the faces of the poor into the dirt.

What gives us the right?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
