Sometimes when you read something that Jesus said, at first blush, it seems completely wrong. Because most times, His perspective, is completely different to ours.

Common sense tells you that you’re going to spend your money on things that you want. So, in essence, where your heart is, that’s where you’ll put your money. But that’s not what Jesus said:

Luke 12:34 Your heart will be where your treasure is.

I used to think that Jesus got this the wrong way round. As I said, surely based on common sense, it’s the other way around – our wallet follows our heart.

But Jesus is putting His finger on a sinister disease here. When I first became a Christian, I was earning a lot of money. Sure, I used to throw loose change into the offering on Sundays, but some weeks, our pastor would go without any income, even though I was earning enough to pay his salary on my own.

Eventually, it became clear to me that how I spent my money, demonstrated what was wrong with my heart. I felt I had to do more but letting go of the cash wasn’t easy. And yet, a strange thing happened when I loosened my grip on the purse strings. Something changed. It was … my heart.

Your heart will be where your treasure is.

It’s an important lesson, because God … He doesn’t need our money. He’s not sitting there in heaven, sweating on how much you and the next person are going to put into the offering this Sunday. After all, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills.

No, God wants you to be generous towards His work, because the thing He’s really interested in, is the health of your heart.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
