James 1:2,3 My brothers and sisters, you will have many kinds of trouble. But this gives you a reason to be very happy. You know that when your faith is tested, you learn to be patient in suffering.

When a storm blows in on your life, as it’s prone to do from time to time, how do you react to it? Do you go with the flow? Do you trust that God knows what He’s doing? Or do you fight it and wrestle with it, all too often in vain?

Just recently some wasps started building a nest way up under the eaves of our house, and I knew that fairly soon a dozen or so young wasps were going to hatch out of it. It kept nagging away at me – all those wasps living in my yard – even in my house. Nasty stuff.

But the nest was two stories up, which put it completely out of my reach. And then, just the other night, we had a huge storm – huge. Driving rain, howling wind – storms are never very nice – but the next morning … well, that wasps’ nest was on the ground so I finished them off with some insect spray.

It’s taken me a while to figure it out, but sometimes we have nasties come into our lives and they’re just out of our reach. But then, in His wisdom, God sends us this howling storm. It’s never very nice. But the next morning those nasties are within our reach so we can finish them off. It happens time and time again.

James 1:2,3 My brothers and sisters, you will have many kinds of trouble. But this gives you a reason to be very happy. You know that when your faith is tested, you learn to be patient in suffering.

So the next time a storm blows into your life, remember – God may well be testing your faith. He may well be teaching you patience through suffering … and at the same time, He may well be cleaning some of those nasties that were set to bite you out of the way.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
