John 7:37,38 Whoever is thirsty may come to me and drink. If anyone believes in me, rivers of living water will flow out from their heart. That is what the Scriptures say.

The thing with adversity is this: all your rivers seem to run dry at the same time. It’s not pretty – and in that dry, parched place, what we long for is a deep, cool drink.

Years ago when I training to become an army officer, we used to go out on exercise for weeks at a time, fighting an imaginary enemy in order to learn the art of war.

Now back then, the army was into what they called “water rationing” – two water bottles per man per day, perhaps. And that was for shaving, washing, cleaning your teeth, cooking and drinking. In those brutally hot summers with all the heavy physical work that fighting battles entailed, let me tell you, that was never, ever enough.

Many’s the time that we’d finish an attack up a steep hill (carrying your heavy pack on your back of course) or digging a deep trench in a defensive position, and all I’d want to do with every fibre of my being was to was guzzle down a whole water bottle full.

Of course. you just couldn’t do that. So in that moment, I remember closing my eyes and imagining what it would be like to go swimming in a nice cool river.

When you’re that thirsty, what you really want is water in abundance. You want to be filled to overflowing. And that holds true in the battles of life as well, when you’ve run completely dry.

John 7:37,38 Whoever is thirsty may come to me and drink. If anyone believes in me, rivers of living water will flow out from their heart. That is what the Scriptures say.

Did you hear what Jesus said? Rivers … an absolute abundance of living water. So next time you run dry, remember this: Jesus is not into water rationing.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
