Psalm 62:3,4 How long will you people attack me? Do you all want to kill me? I am like a leaning wall, like a fence ready to fall. You want only to destroy me, to bring me down from my important position. It makes you happy to tell lies about me. In public, you say nice things, but in private, you curse me.

There is so much pretending that goes on in the world today in people’s lives, perhaps even in our lives. In public, we say nice things about others, but in private we curse them.

Now, at first blush, that may seem like rather a harsh accusation to make. But think back to the last time someone annoyed or offended you. Did you keep the peace in public, but then go home and grumble about them? Did you smile to their face, but feel that dark cloud grip your heart?

King David was often on the receiving end of that sort of behaviour. Sure, his predecessor King Saul tried to kill him even before he became king – and yes, armies came against him when he was. But his worst enemies were the ones inside his own royal court – even his own son. Here he is reflecting on those enemies:

Psalm 62:3,4 How long will you people attack me? Do you all want to kill me? I am like a leaning wall, like a fence ready to fall. You want only to destroy me, to bring me down from my important position. It makes you happy to tell lies about me. In public, you say nice things, but in private, you curse me.

There’s way too much pretending going on in the hearts and lives of people who claim to believe in God; people who claim Jesus as their Saviour; people who are all smiles on the outside, but dark within.

Can I implore you today to examine your heart; to have an open, teachable heart in this regard. Whom have you told lies about in public? To whom do you say nice things to their face, but curse them in your heart? It’s time to stop doing that. Stop pretending.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
