1 Thessalonians 5:16-19 Always be full of joy. Never stop praying. Whatever happens, always be thankful. This is how God wants you to live in Christ Jesus. Don't stop the work of the Holy Spirit.

I spent a week and a half in India recently. It’s hard work, speaking at lots of events, meeting lots of people. But I absolutely love the place, the people, the vibrancy, the chaos and the food. I really like the spicy Indian curries … although, I’d have to say that after a hectic three weeks on the road and lots of spicy food, I was seriously hanging out for some bland food.

So, as I was leaving late at night, going through security at Rajiv Ghandi International Airport in Hyderabad, I begin to salivate, because I knew that just on the other side of security, as you turn right out of the duty free, there’s a KFC outlet. Whoop!

Now, I don’t eat that stuff very often, but this night was going to be an exception. So, you can imagine my disappointment as I swung round the corner, only to discover that the KFC outlet had been replaced – you guessed it – by a curry joint!

Disappointment comes in all different shapes and sizes. Big and small. It comes suddenly sometimes, other times it creeps up on you. But disappointment, come on, it’s inevitable. What matters though, is how you handle it.

Always be full of joy. Never stop praying. Whatever happens, always be thankful. This is how God wants you to live in Christ Jesus. Don’t stop the work of the Holy Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-19)

How do you cope with disappointment? Always be full of joy, because the love of God, His tender mercies, His kindness towards you are always right there with you. This world may disappoint, it will disappoint, but He will never disappoint you. That’s worth rejoicing in and it’s worth being thankful for. When you think of it, when you have a thankful heart and a joyful heart, it’s actually pretty hard to be disappointed.

And when the disappointments are big, when they really hurt as they do sometimes, never stop praying. Because God is right there in that place with you. He hears you.

In case you’re wondering, I had curry one more time that night at the airport. And it’s this very passage that God brought to me on my smartphone. And honestly, it made me smile.

Always be full of joy. Never stop praying, and whatever happens, always be thankful.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
