A lot of people get a tad uncomfortable when ministries ask them for financial support. Surely if the ministry trusted God, they wouldn’t have to ask. God would just provide, right?

For a long time, something that Jesus said that confused me. Here it is:

Matthew 6:21 Your heart will be where your treasure is.

It seemed to me that He had that the wrong way around. Shouldn’t the heart come first? Don’t we put our money into the things we have a heart for? But no, that’s not what Jesus said.

The question is: why did He put it that way? Why not the other way around?

From time to time, I hear people complaining about Christian “fundraising”. Why does this ministry or that ministry ask me for money? Have you ever felt that little grumble in your heart? Well, here’s the answer.

Let’s get a revelation. God is not sweating on your cash or mine to advance His kingdom. After all, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. He created the whole universe. So why is it then, that He sets things up so that His people have to stump up with the cash to get His work done? Answer? Because He wants our hearts in the right place.

The first “fundraiser” in the Bible is:

Exodus 25:2 Tell the Israelites to bring me gifts. You will accept gifts for me from everyone who is willing to give.

So why does God involve His people in financially supporting His work? Because He knows that wherever your treasure is, there your heart will also be. And He wants your heart.

When we give God the first fruits of our income, when we think about Him before we think about ourselves, then we know that our heart is in the right place.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
