One of the things that I find intensely annoying about my parents is that the things they tried to teach me when I was young and rebellious turned out to be absolutely right! Don’t you hate that?!

There are things that our parents drummed into us over and over again which at the time didn’t make sense; which at the time simply caused us to roll our eyes, and in our hearts and minds exclaim, “They have no idea!”

But it turns out that learning not slurp your soup, learning to push your chair in after dinner and to clear the table without being asked – strange as it sounds – all end up paying dividends later in life. Who’d have thought? Certainly not me!

Proverbs 13:1 A wise son listens to his father’s advice, but a proud son will not listen to correction.

I wish I could tell you that I was a wise son, but I wasn’t. To the contrary, I was a slow learner. Yet as the years have marched on, I’ve come to the inevitable conclusion that the more quickly we learn lessons, the more rapidly we take on wisdom, the better life gets.

We chatted about accepting correction last week, but I’ve circled back to it again today because – let’s face it – accepting criticism and correction … that’s not such a strong suit for most of us, amen?

Wisdom and pride, according to this verse, are complete opposites.

A wise son listens to his father’s advice, but a proud son will not listen to correction.

A wise heart is open. A proud heart is closed. Life gets a whole bunch better when we learn to accept correction.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
