Malachi 2:14 You cry out, "Why has the LORD abandoned us?" I'll tell you why! Because the LORD witnessed the vows you and your wife made to each other on your wedding day when you were young. But you have been disloyal to her, though she remained your faithful companion, the wife of your marriage vows.

The thing about being husband and wife is that, over the years, you get to know one another’s faults more intimately than anyone else on the planet.

Now, the reason that most people get married is that they think that their bride, or their groom, as the case may be – is the most wonderful person in the world. Even in cases where marriages are arranged, and let me tell you, that remains very common in many parts of the world, there’s an initial passion, an initial joy in most cases, at becoming husband and wife.

But that’s a feeling that soon evaporates. The humdrum sets in. The daily routine of life, earning a living, paying the rent or the mortgage, the struggle, for many, just for survival. And that’s even before the children come along as they do for many, to add another layer of pressure.

So when that feeling, that passion evaporates, we start playing the blame game. It’s her fault. It’s his fault. That’s just what happens.

But the question that we really need to be asking, is “What about me? Am I living up to that title of Mr or Mrs Most-Wonderful-Person-in-the-World?” Chances are, we’re not – and that right there, is a brilliant place to start, in getting the passion back into your marriage.

I’m pretty sure that if you’re married, you, like me, on the day that you married your Most Wonderful Person in the World – made a vow to love them unconditionally, until you’re parted by death, right?

You don’t have to commit adultery to break that vow. You don’t have to sleep with someone else, to completely shatter that vow.

You cry out, “Why has the LORD abandoned us?” I’ll tell you why! Because the LORD witnessed the vows you and your wife made to each other on your wedding day when you were young. But you have been disloyal to her, though she remained your faithful companion, the wife of your marriage vows. (Malachi 2:14)

When a husband or a wife falls into the habit, into the rut, of being obstinate, disrespectful, constantly touchy or cranky, unforgiving, judgmental … the list goes on, right … when we get into the habit of treating our spouse badly, and that’s what it is, we are indeed, breaking our marriage vows. Let’s be clear about that.

So, one of the most powerful ways of saying “I love you”, of getting the passion back into your marriage, is to examine your own heart, identify the mistakes that you’re making, and do whatever it takes, to honour that promise you once made.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
