Matthew 13:40-43 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. (ESV)

Here’s a question for you today. Do you believe in “hell”? Do you believe that it’s a place of physical separation from God and a place of torment, or not? Because what we believe makes a huge difference to how we live.

Surveys consistently show that amongst American Christians, some 76% believe in heaven, but only 32% believe that hell is a place of eternal torment and suffering. A New York Times article a couple of years ago put it like this: “The idea of eternal damnation is neither biblically, philosophically nor morally justified. Yet for many, it retains a psychological allure.” That’s certainly an interesting perspective. I’m not sure what Bible that guy was reading, but here’s what Jesus had to say:

Matthew 13:40-42 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. (ESV)

Hmm. Charles Spurgeon put it like this: “The cross is the danger signal to you. It warns you that if God spared not His only Son, He will not spare you. It is the lighthouse set on the rocks of sin to warn you that swift and sure destruction awaits sinners if you continue to rebel against the Lord.”

If hell doesn’t exist, then heaven is meaningless. So let’s get a revelation here today. According to Jesus, hell is real.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
