Matthew 6:7-10 When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (NRSV)

It’s always interesting to just call time out every now and then, to ask ourselves what is it that we’re living for? What’s the most important thing in our lives? So, here we go … time out!

Question: How much of your prayer life, how much of your dreams and desires, how much of your energy and focus in life is zeroed in on these three short words that Jesus taught His disciples to pray: Your kingdom come. Of course, we all know where they come from:

Matthew 6:7-10 When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (NRSV)

There they are: your kingdom come. So, seriously … is the focus of your life on seeing God’s will done on this earth, or yours? Is the focus of your life on playing your part in growing God’s kingdom, whatever it might cost, or on building your own empire?

I ask for a reason, because Jesus taught us to pray: God, your kingdom come. God your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Now I could be wrong here, but presumably if that was the first thing Jesus taught his disciples to pray, then he wants their lives focussed on that very thing.

The more comfortable we become, the more interested we become in what’s in it for us. That’s empire building.

God didn’t call us to empire building. He called us to kingdom building.

Your kingdom come.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
