Acts 18:2b-4 Paul went to visit Aquila and Priscilla. They were tentmakers, the same as Paul, so he stayed with them and worked with them. Every Sabbath day Paul went to the synagogue and talked with both Jews and Greeks, trying to persuade them to believe in Jesus.

Some people look at the job they’re called to, and think to themselves, “Well, that isn’t really contributing all that much to growing the kingdom of God.” When in fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

I had coffee recently with a man in his sixties, who, by any measure, is a successful businessman. Now, he’s an accountant and God bless all the accountants out there, but me – I think I’d die if I had to do that for a living. But he loves it.

And I was intrigued. I asked him “Why do you still do it?” I mean, he could obviously afford to retire. He smiled and said, quite simply, “Because I like helping people.” Now I know that, on top of helping people, he gives much of his money away.

I know so many people who believe in God, who feel that all they can do is be an accountant, or a childcare worker, or whatever it is they do. It seems mundane, boring.

So, the Apostle Paul, by trade, was a tentmaker. And yet who would have thought that a tentmaker in the first century, could still be used by God to bless you and me, two thousand years on.

Whatever it is you do, whatever God has called you to, there will always be a way that you can use that calling, that job, that profession, for His glory. Always.

All it takes is a bit of ingenuity and imagination, to discover the outlet that God has already prepared for you, to grow His kingdom through your work.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
