Mark 12:29-31 Jesus answered, “The most important command is this: ‘People of Israel, listen! The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second most important command is this: ‘Love your neighbour the same as you love yourself.’ These two commands are the most important.”

Well, here we are on day nine of the new year. Things are, no doubt, well and truly back to normal. We’re each back in the swing of things, whatever that looks like. But let me ask you, have you just climbed back into the same rut you were in last year, yet still hoping that things will be different; that they’ll get better?

That’s a bit of a depressing thought, isn’t it? As they say, the very definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again yet expecting a different result. But honestly, most of us are resistant to change. There’s a degree of comfort in the familiar; in the well-worn path that we tread, even if it’s far from ideal.

Somehow, our identity seems to be wrapped up in the way we’ve always done things and for many, change – even a small one – implies that they must’ve been getting it wrong all this time.

So might I ask you, what’s your focus as this new year begins to unfold? How are you going to lay hold of the sense of significance and deep satisfaction with your life that’s perhaps been eluding you for a while?

Maybe it’s time to sharpen your focus, to get back to basics and focus on what really matters. So what does really matter? What is the most important thing in your life?

Mark 12:29-31 Jesus answered, “The most important command is this: ‘People of Israel, listen! The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second most important command is this: ‘Love your neighbour the same as you love yourself.’ These two commands are the most important.”

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
