Question: can God be trusted? After all, He makes rather a lot of promises in His Word. Some of those, frankly, seem outrageous amidst the hurly-burly of life. Can they, can He, be trusted

In pretty much every sphere of life there’s the theory and there’s the practice. You can study the theory until the cows come home and yet still it doesn’t always help you out there in the heat of battle.

Back in my military days, we’d go out on exercise and practice attacking a pretend enemy time after time. All well and good, except we had blank ammunition in our rifles.

I remember thinking, what would this be like for real? What would it be like with real bullets whizzing past? What if I saw my buddy just a few metres away take one in the neck? Will the theory work in practice? In the same way, God’s often outrageous promises aren’t proven until they’ve been tried and tested in the heat of battle.

Psalm 18 was written by King David of Israel as a song addressed to God on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, including would-be assassin Saul:

Those are the words of experience. Those are the words of someone who’s battle-tested the promises of God in life and death situations. Yep, sometimes God leads us into dangerous places. But His way is perfect. The LORD’s promise always proves to be true. He protects those who trust in him.
