Ruth 2:4 Just then Boaz came from Bethlehem. He said to the reapers, “The LORD be with you.” They answered, “The LORD bless you.” (NRSV)

Anyone who’s married will be able to tell you that every now and then, their wife or their husband does something completely unexpected. You thought you knew them, but boom!

And that’s great, because it keeps things interesting. The truth is you never really know someone one hundred percent, even if you’ve been married to them for fifty years or more.

Now let’s transpose that phenomenon into our relationship with God. As much as we yearn to know Him, He is so vast – omnipotent, omnipresent, completely unbound by the restrictions of time that govern our lives – that His propensity for surprising us is infinitely greater than anyone else we know.

If you’ve ever read the book of Ruth in the Old Testament, you’ll know that she was widowed at a young age in a foreign land. But she was so faithful to her mother-in-law Naomi (also widowed) that unbeknown to her, God decided to bless her.

So, Ruth is out labouring in a field, when the owner of that field happens along.

Ruth 2:4 Just then Boaz came from Bethlehem. He said to the reapers, “The LORD be with you.” They answered, “The LORD bless you.” (NRSV)

And if you follow the rest of the story, you’ll know that Ruth and Boaz end up marrying, and Ruth (a gentile no less!!) becomes one of only three women mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew Chapter 1.

The point of me sharing that with you? Don’t put God in a box. Don’t allow your expectations of Him to sink so low that your relationship becomes mundane. Because He is very much into those “Just then…” moments.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
