When things turn against us, when strife, confusion and pain come at us from all directions, what we need is the strength, the speed, the agility to make it through. That’s what we need!

Yesterday we discovered through the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk that when all the good things that we’d planned for ourselves have fallen in a heap, God’s strategy for getting us through them is for us to exercise defiant faith; to be glad in the LORD and rejoice in God your Saviour in the very face of our adversity.

And as intensely counterintuitive as that may be, in the very next verse he shares with us the benefit of his experience; the outcome of his defiant faith:

Habakkuk 3:19 The Lord GOD gives me my strength. He helps me run fast like a deer. He leads me safely on the mountains.

Where does this strength come from? Is it something we have to conjure up out of nothing? No! The Lord GOD gives us the strength. To the point where He helps us to run like a deer, leading us safely over the mountains.

Just picture that deer leaping over clefts and crevasses, afforded the safety that those mountaintops bring. That’s the very picture of speed, strength and agility. Who made all that happen on Habakkuk’s dark days? God did.

When we aren’t able, God is. When we’re weak, He’s strong and it’s a strength, speed and agility that He will impart – even on the darkest of days, especially on those dark days – to those whom He loves.

Lord God, give me strength. Help me to run like a deer over those mountaintops.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
