Ezekiel 36:25-27 Then I will sprinkle pure water on you and make you pure. I will wash away all your filth, the filth from those nasty idols, and I will make you pure. I will also put a new spirit in you to change your way of thinking. I will take out the heart of stone from your body and give you a tender, human heart. I will put my Spirit inside you and change you so that you will obey my laws. You will carefully obey my commands.

The very idea of handing their lives over to God, of choosing to live for Him, in obedience to Him, is for many a repugnant one. Why, in this day and age, would you possibly want to do that?

Recently, Jess, the daughter of two dear friends of mine, was married. My heart leapt for joy as these two young people pledged their lives to one another. Why, in this day and age, would you possibly want to do that?

The answer is love. Two have become one. And despite the apparent restriction that this exclusivity implies – no more dating other people – those two will discover a completeness they never thought possible.

And exactly the same thing is true when we turn our backs on the world  and pledge our exclusive love to this God who loved us so much that He sent Jesus to suffer and die to pay for our sin. From God’s perspective, it looks like this:

Ezekiel 36:25-27 Then I will sprinkle pure water on you and make you pure. I will wash away all your filth, the filth from those nasty idols, and I will make you pure. I will also put a new spirit in you to change your way of thinking. I will take out the heart of stone from your body and give you a tender, human heart. I will put my Spirit inside you and change you so that you will … carefully obey my commands

And in that wondrously beautiful union, in that apparent restriction is to be found a completeness, a freedom, available nowhere else.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
