So can I ask you; on a scale of zero to 10, how tired are you? Is it something that goes on day after day? And how much of that is caused by your busy schedule, the cracking pace at which you live your life? Well?

I was at a Christian leadership conference the other day, and one of the attendees was boasting over morning coffee that he hadn’t taken a decent holiday for over ten years. What? Is he nuts?

And yet so many people these days seem to be working themselves into the ground. We carry our busyness around as a badge of honour, and then we wonder why we’re so exhausted.

As a reforming workaholic from way back, I’m speaking from experience. Frankly, I have more than enough on my to-do list to keep me going 24/7. The emails pour in faster than I can get to them. But there comes a time when you have to say ‘enough is enough’.

I’m a very early starter – always have been. In fact, the day I prepared this devotion I was up at 1:45 am. I spend time with the Lord, and it’s also when I do my best work, so it’s not at all unusual for me.

But I’ve also had to draw a line. Come early to mid-afternoon, I have a rest. I turn my mobile off when my wife comes home. I don’t check my e-mails at night anymore, and frankly, sometimes people have to wait days, even weeks, for me to answer them. Jesus said,

Matthew 11:28
Come to me all of you who are tired from the heavy burden you have been forced to carry. I will give you rest.

That’s a great invitation. But we have to decide to respond. It’s up to us to make a decision to draw the line and say ‘enough is enough’.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
