Download audio fileOver the years I’ve seen many people make mistakes – me included, definitely! Now, I don’t have that much of a problem with honest mistakes. But there are two things that I do have a problem with; laziness and dishonesty.
As a ministry leader, I’m keen to develop a culture in our organisation where, when people do their best and still fail, that’s okay. Mistakes happen, that’s life! Let’s learn, let’s not repeat them, let’s not play the blame game, let’s move on.
But laziness is something that I simply can’t tolerate. And yet it’s something that you see way too often in the Kingdom of God. People think to themselves, ‘Well, we’re all brothers and sisters. It’s all about love. I can basically do what I like.’ But that’s simply not what God wants of us.
Romans 12:11 As you serve the Lord, work hard and don’t be lazy. Be excited about serving him!
Joseph in the Old Testament worked so hard in the face of repeated injustice and adversity, bringing his gifts to bear for the glory of God time and time again.
Jesus – you’d never describe Him as lazy, would you? So what makes us think that when we’re serving God, laziness is acceptable.
Friend, people out there are dying. They need to hear about Jesus. You have gifts and abilities that the rest of us don’t have; gifts and abilities that God can work through mightily to draw people to Himself.
Can I run a different translation of that verse by you? One that’s even more in-your-face than the one I’ve just shared?
Romans 12:11Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. (ESV)
When it comes to serving God, don’t be lazy.
That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
