Being married ain’t easy some days. There are so many things that conspire to tear a marriage apart – from the lie that divorce is a valid lifestyle choice, to sickness, depression, even the loss of a child.

It’s a tragic statistic that the divorce rate amongst couples who’ve lost a child is markedly higher than for couples who haven’t. That’s so sad. After such a terrible loss, husband and wife need one another’s love more than ever.

At the other end of the scale, some people wake up one day and simply decide that they’ve fallen out of love with their soulmate. I was reading an article recently written by a woman who went out for coffee with her husband, only to have him push divorce papers across the table.

Bottom line … any couple could find any number of reasons to divorce. Sure, why not?! Well, here’s why not.

Genesis 2:24,25 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife. In this way two people become one. The man and his wife were naked, but they were not ashamed.

That word there, “joined”, means literally “cleaved”. It’s a permanent joining. In this way two people become one. It’s an intimate joining. The man and his wife were naked, but they weren’t ashamed.

And when God joins two people together like that, their tearing apart is the most painful thing imaginable. It was never meant to be so. Yes, sometimes there’s violence, abuse, or repeated adultery and divorce is inevitable. But short of that, just in case the thought’s crossed your mind, don’t. The two have become one.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
