Psalm 34:23,24 The LORD shows us how we should live, and he is pleased when he sees people living that way. If they stumble, they will not fall, because the LORD reaches out to steady them.

It’s one of life’s great annoyances that when you set out to do the right thing, you often don’t quite get there in doing it. Or is it just me? No, I don’t think so. We set out with the best of intentions, but then we fail.

Call it what you will – failure, a stumble, sin. The label doesn’t matter quite as much as the outcome. Personally, I have a heart to follow Jesus – a real passion, in fact. I hope and pray that it’s the same for you.

And when we realise all that He did for us in dying on that cross to pay the price that God’s justice demands for our sin, that desire to honour Him, to follow Him, to serve Him and yes, to obey Him, grows even stronger.

And we know, absolutely, from Scripture that God loves to see our hearts in that place. So, what then? What do we do when we stumble? What do we do when we fail Him?

Psalm 34:23,24 The LORD shows us how we should live, and he is pleased when he sees people living that way. If they stumble, they will not fall, because the LORD reaches out to steady them.

The Lord does indeed show us how we should live. He is indeed pleased when He sees us living that way. But now, look at the next bit:

If they stumble, they will not fall, because the LORD reaches out to steady them.

He’s right here, ready and waiting to steady us when we stumble, so that we won’t fall. That has to be good news, doesn’t it?

It seems to me that a mistake that makes you humble, one that has you relying on the grace of God, is much better than an achievement that makes you proud.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
