Download audio fileWhen we’re faced with adversity, we often don’t feel all that courageous. To be honest, the feeling is more one of fear and apprehension. But that doesn’t mean the courage isn’t there.
Have you ever felt the call of God to step out into the unknown? Life was going along just fine … but then, all of a sudden, the waters became murky. The sun disappeared. Things were no longer as clear and as obvious as you’d like them to be.
And then … then things turn from bad to worse. Perhaps people say bad things about you. Perhaps, as some do, you missed out on a job or a promotion because of your faith in Jesus (it happens more than we’d like to think).
God has a funny habit, right in the middle of those sorts of situations, to call us to step out into the unknown: Perhaps to love those who persecute us; perhaps to take a leap of faith into something new, something risky that, with all you have going on right now, could go terribly wrong.
The writer of the book of Hebrews was writing into just such a situation. Those reading the book had been through bad times.
And to encourage them through those times, he says this:
Hebrews 10:35 So don’t lose the courage that you had in the past. Your courage will be rewarded richly.
Courage is an interesting thing. Think about it. It’s something you only need when you’re afraid. Look, you’ve been through bad stuff before. You’ve stepped out and honoured God in the face of adversity before. And in doing that, you’ve demonstrated that the courage is indeed there, even if right now it doesn’t feel like that.
So don’t lose the courage that you had in the past.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
