Gossip has the power to ruin reputations. A rumour here, a whisper there and before you know it, the gossip mill’s running at full steam. What is it that compels us to be part of that nonsense? And it’s more than just nonsense, right. It destroys lives.

The truth is that we each have things in our lives that we’re not proud of; that we wouldn’t want doing the rounds of the gossip mill.

Just imagine if God were a gossip. He knows everything about you, everything you’ve ever thought, said and done. What if He went about revealing your darkest secrets to anyone and everyone?

Fortunately, He’s not. Fortunately, He won’t. In fact out of His compassion for each one of us, His Word the Bible speaks clearly, strongly and consistently against gossip.

Proverbs 11:13 People who tell secrets about others cannot be trusted. Those who can be trusted keep quiet.

Would you trust someone whom you know to be a gossip? Not on your life, right. You want to be known as a trustworthy person, as do I. And the way we develop that reputation is to stop gossip dead in its tracks.

As someone once said, gossip dies when it hits a wise person’s ears. So in your workplace, amongst your circle of friends, even in your own family, what opportunities present themselves right now for you to stop the gossip?

Be that wise person. Be the one who cuts gossip off at its knees. Be the one who shows God’s love by shutting your mouth.

People who tell secrets about others cannot be trusted. Those who can be trusted keep quiet.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
